7 Differences Between Chinese & Japanese Acupuncture
When looking for the best acupuncture near me there are many factors to consider. You will first want to strongly review the differences between Chinese and Japanese acupuncture so that you locate a facility that offers the technique that makes you most comfortable and offers you the results you are looking for. Dr. Michelle Wischmeyer is proud to offer you both traditional and Japanese acupuncture treatments and would be happy to help you find the right fit for your unique situation. Seven distinct differences between the two methods are laid out below.
- Size of the needles: Japanese acupuncturists tend to use asmaller and sharper needle. This is keeping in line with the idea of a gentler experience. Chinese methods use a larger and more aggressive needle.
- Depth of insertion: The Japanese method calls for a superficial insertion while the Chinese method calls for a much greater insertion that some patients find too difficult to tolerate.
- Herbs in combination with treatment: Japanese acupuncturists do no use herbs but Chinese acupuncturists use them as part of standard practice.
- Touch as part of pre-treatment: Again, keeping in line with a very gentle and peaceful experience the Japanese method relies heavily on touch. The Chinese method does not place any emphasis on touch.
- Insertion method: Guiding tubes are now used as part of standard practice for Japanese methods where as the Chinese prefer to manipulate the needle even once inserted.
- Stronger Qi Sensation: Qi is the energy that flows through our bodies that acupuncture works to restore. The Chinese method typically provides a stronger Qi sensation because of the more aggressive techniques used.
- Moxa: The Japanese use burning cones of moxa (from mugwort plant) all over the skin before the needling process as it provides a warming sensation.
The Chinese method does not call for moxa to be used. If you find you are having a hard time deciding which method you prefer do not hesitate to reach out to us. We would be happy to help you decide on the right fit so that you can achieve optimal results.
